iPhone Feature Requests

Request #1: Ability to forward received SMS text messages.

On my LG Verizon phone, I could forward on to one of my contacts a text message I had received without any issue. Although I didn’t do it very often, it would come in handy. Not sure how Apple would do it with the conversation style format of the current SMS application.

I’ll probably be adding to this whenever I find other things to add, for now though, that’s all…

YouTube and Copyright

July 7th, 2008

I got an email today from YouTube stating one of my recent videos was rejected due to copyright infringement. I had posted a video last week of Widespread Panic covering Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me”. I really like this song by Van Morrison, and also dig Widespread’s cover of it, which I saw live at Uptown Theater here in KC.

Anyway, it was one the second video I had posted of some of video I have taken at several concerts I have been to so far, but the first copyright notice I have gotten. In all fairness, YouTube does state pretty clearly that any footage of concerts without the express permission of the copyright owners is prohibited. So, nothing I can really do.

The internet has become so congested with piracy this, piracy that, lawsuit here, lawsuit there. Recently, VIACOM sued Google (YouTube’s parent company) for a billion dollars, and a judge ordered Google to hand over every user’s information, how many times they watched any video, what they posted, etc. This is coming from a judge that probably knows very little about the internet. However, it is setting a pretty bad precedence on a user’s privacy. I have a feeling this type of thing is going to continue until the Recording and Movie industry can figure out a way to capitalize on the internet as an advertising and distribution medium. The only thing they’ve figured out so far is how to sue people. Seems to me like they’re trying to paddle upstream here.

For now, I’ll abide by the terms YouTube has set forth. Maybe someday we can spread the word of artists so that new fans can go out and see live shows, instead of pirating their mp3s off the internet and never knowing how great live shows are.

I Got My Stimulus Payment!

May 13th, 2008

I got my stimulus payment deposited in my bank account this week, and I couldn’t help but think of how I was going to use that money to stimulate the economy, like it’s supposed to be used. Sure, I could pay bills (no fun), I could save it (no fun), I could blow it on a huge party for all my friends (fun, but not that practical), or… I could use it to buy a new 3G iPhone!

I have wanted an iPhone ever since they came out, but always heard complaints about the speed of the iPhone, but more importantly to me was the cost. What perfect timing for a free $600! You have to admit, they aren’t cheap, and they fell victim the inevitable growing pains of a new product. Now that Apple has learned from their first iPhone, I’m ready to try out their latest release.

Look forward to the first of June, I’m sure I’ll post something about how great the new iPhone is…

Online Ticket Sales

October 23rd, 2007

I have been noticing recently several incidents in which online ticket sales for certain entertainment (Garth Brooks, Hannah Montana) or sporting events (Rockies World Series games) have been immediately sold out to the public, or crashed servers altogether preventing purchase online. What is causing this? Software, hackers, ticket brokers, and excited fans, with the obvious winner being the ticket brokers, and losers being the fans. Read more…
