Darius Rucker Goes Country

July 20th, 2008

On my way home this afternoon, I had a chance to listen to a lot of XM Radio and my iPod. A song that I have heard over the past week has been “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” by Darius Rucker. If any of you have heard the song, you’ll notice Darius has a very familiar voice. He was the lead singer for Hootie and the Blowfish. It took me a week to figure it out until I finally looked it up. I really like the song, and he has an amazing singing voice. Take a listen to his new release!

YouTube and Copyright

July 7th, 2008

I got an email today from YouTube stating one of my recent videos was rejected due to copyright infringement. I had posted a video last week of Widespread Panic covering Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me”. I really like this song by Van Morrison, and also dig Widespread’s cover of it, which I saw live at Uptown Theater here in KC.

Anyway, it was one the second video I had posted of some of video I have taken at several concerts I have been to so far, but the first copyright notice I have gotten. In all fairness, YouTube does state pretty clearly that any footage of concerts without the express permission of the copyright owners is prohibited. So, nothing I can really do.

The internet has become so congested with piracy this, piracy that, lawsuit here, lawsuit there. Recently, VIACOM sued Google (YouTube’s parent company) for a billion dollars, and a judge ordered Google to hand over every user’s information, how many times they watched any video, what they posted, etc. This is coming from a judge that probably knows very little about the internet. However, it is setting a pretty bad precedence on a user’s privacy. I have a feeling this type of thing is going to continue until the Recording and Movie industry can figure out a way to capitalize on the internet as an advertising and distribution medium. The only thing they’ve figured out so far is how to sue people. Seems to me like they’re trying to paddle upstream here.

For now, I’ll abide by the terms YouTube has set forth. Maybe someday we can spread the word of artists so that new fans can go out and see live shows, instead of pirating their mp3s off the internet and never knowing how great live shows are.

CMT Awards

April 14th, 2008

I haven’t updated the site in a while, and I have been on my computer all night monitoring some work stuff, so I figured I could write an update.

I’m watching the CMT Awards, and realize that no matter how many of my friends want to make fun of me for liking the music, I am truly a country music fan. Even though I’m a fan of all types of music, I grew up with country, and I think it will always stay with me.

I will say one thing, Billy Ray Cyrus is lucky that he got into acting with his daughter, Miley, who has recently become pretty popular. Billy Ray is really not that bad of an artist, just famous for a pretty corny song Achy Breaky Heart.

I listen to country every day on my way to and from work on XM Radio, mainly Highway 16. I don’t really listen to much of the radio commercials and talk any more, it’s pretty nice.

Online Ticket Sales

October 23rd, 2007

I have been noticing recently several incidents in which online ticket sales for certain entertainment (Garth Brooks, Hannah Montana) or sporting events (Rockies World Series games) have been immediately sold out to the public, or crashed servers altogether preventing purchase online. What is causing this? Software, hackers, ticket brokers, and excited fans, with the obvious winner being the ticket brokers, and losers being the fans. Read more…
