Unspoken Country Bond

July 20th, 2008

I went home this weekend for family pictures in Wichita, KS. Of course, I also had to enjoy Sunday lunch with my family at my grandmother’s and eat some wonderful food! Every time I return home to Winfield, it’s about a 3 hour drive from Kansas City. I get a chance to listen to a lot of music, and look at a lot of fields and rolling plains. But there is one thing that I thought about on the way home…

Growing up in the country, you will know what I am talking about, especially if you drive a truck. It’s an unspoken bond between farmers, and people of the country to be friendly. Of course, this is during the day before the whiskey comes out a night, which is another story. For the most part, country folk are friendly people. When you’re driving outside the city in any rural part of Kansas, you’ll find that total strangers will wave at you from their vehicle in passing. By wave, I mean the two or three finger wave with their wrist still on the steering wheel, somewhat nonchalant. Whether or not you know them, they just do. I’ve noticed it a lot more since I have driven a truck for every vehicle of mine from the time I was able to drive. For some reason, it doesn’t happen quite as much in cars. Either way, it’s something I think is pretty cool. So, on my way home, I followed suit, and waved right back to those that waved at me, hand on steering wheel, with two fingers.

So, next time you are in a rural part of Kansas, be friendly, you may just get a wave or two without even trying.

Halloween at T5

October 24th, 2007

My roommates and some friends decided to get together this year and all go as American Gladiators. Here’s a preview of some other dudes that thought of it before us. We’ll be at T5 in KC at Union Station. I’ll try to get some pics up after this weekend. If you want to see us in person, get yourself some tickets!

Update:  T5 was a blast!  There are a bunch of pictures of the group up on Facebook, just go to my profile and look at the photos, it’s worth it, trust me.  If you don’t have Facebook, tough luck, sorry.

Online Ticket Sales

October 23rd, 2007

I have been noticing recently several incidents in which online ticket sales for certain entertainment (Garth Brooks, Hannah Montana) or sporting events (Rockies World Series games) have been immediately sold out to the public, or crashed servers altogether preventing purchase online. What is causing this? Software, hackers, ticket brokers, and excited fans, with the obvious winner being the ticket brokers, and losers being the fans. Read more…
